Early puberty in boys increases substance abuse problems

A new study suggests that boys experiencing early puberty are at a higher risk for substance use than those who attain puberty later.

Researchers at Purdue University suggest that brain-related testosterone activity contributes to an increased risk of substance use more than an earlier appearance of maturity and accompanying social pressures in early pubescent boys.

“The earlier your first sip of alcohol or that you try other kinds of drugs, the more likely you are to go on to develop lifelong addiction and problems with substance use. A good way to prevent long-term substance use problems is to delay that onset as long as possible,” said Kristine Marceau, an assistant professor.

Early doses of testosterone speed the development of certain areas of the brain that heighten reward-seeking behaviour before the brain develops those parts involved in decision-making and impulse control. This mismatch puts youth at risk of engaging in substance use before time.

Understanding the cause for increased substance use behaviour in early adolescents is necessary for developing prevention strategies that protect for the avoidance of lifelong problems with addiction.

Half of the boys in the study came from families with fathers who had problems with substance use disorders, a rate far higher than the average population. Boys matriculated into the study starting at age 11. Researchers followed the boy’s relationship with substance use for ten different drugs at age 16 until the age of 30. Nurses took observational measures of physical signs of puberty and hormone concentrations.

Testosterone and its initial timing rather than visible puberty-related changes and the pace at which boys progressed through puberty were identified as the culprit for the increased substance use behaviour. The findings appeared in the Journal of Child Development.

LIC board approves acquisition of 51% stake in IDBI Bank

The LIC board on Monday gave approval to the insurance behemoth for acquiring of up to 51% stake in IDBI Bank, economic affairs secretary S C Garg said.

Now the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will approach markets regulator SEBI.

Insurance regulator IRDAI has already given its approval to the insurer for the stake purchase. Garg said the board, which met in New Delhi, approved LIC buying up to 51% stake in IDBI Bank.

LIC stake buy will help the debt-ridden state-owned bank get a capital support of Rs 10,000- 13,000 crore.

LIC has been looking to enter the banking space by acquiring a majority stake in IDBI Bank as the deal is expected to provide business synergies despite the lender’s stressed balance sheet.

It will get about 2,000 branches through which it can sell its products, while the bank would get massive funds from LIC.

Once the deal goes through, IDBI Bank, which is grappling with mounting toxic loans with gross non-performing assets rising to a staggering Rs 55,600 crore at the end of the March quarter, will get much needed capital support to revive its fortune.

WhatsApp’s CEO Jan Koum to leave Facebook over privacy clash: Everything to know

WhatsApp’s CEO Jan Koum to leave Facebook over privacy clash: Everything to know

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum will be leaving Facebook. Koum’s departure is believed to be over clashes with Facebook over the issue of privacy.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum will be leaving Facebook, nearly ten years after he and co-founder Brian Action created the popular messaging app. WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for nearly $19 billion, which was the social media network’s most expensive acquisition ever. Koum’s departure comes at a time when Facebook is under the scanner over data privacy. It has been reported that the WhatsApp CEO quit over differences with the company regarding user privacy and weakening of encryption. Here’s a look at the reactions to Koum’s exit and what has been confirmed so far.The WhatsApp CEO and co-founder Jan Koum wrote a short note on his Facebook page announcing his departure from the company. He wrote, “It’s been almost a decade since Brian and I started WhatsApp, and it’s been an amazing journey with some of the best people. But it is time for me to move on.” Koum added he was blessed to have worked “with such an incredibly small team and see how a crazy amount of focus can produce an app used by so many people all over the world.” He added that the “team was stronger than ever and will continue to do amazing things.” Koum did not reveal in his post what his next venture will be, but said that he will do things outside of the technology world. This includes “collecting rare air-cooled Porsches, working on my cars and playing ultimate frisbee.” The post concludes by saying, “And I’ll still be cheering WhatsApp on – just from the outside. Thanks to everyone who has made this journey possible.” While Koum’s post does not talk about disagreements over privacy, a Washington Post report said that he is quitting over clashes with the parent company Facebook on various issues. These include WhatsApp’s overall strategy, Facebook using WhatsApp’s personal data and possible weakening of its encryption. The report cites people who are familiar with internal discussions and notes that Koum’s exit is unusual given he was the only founder of a company bought by Facebook, who was on the company’s board. WhatsApp executives were opposed to Facebook building a user profile with the app’s data which would be used across Facebook and its platforms for ad-targeting, recommending Facebook friends, etc, points out the Washington Post report. However,  both Jan Koum and his co-founder Brian Acton eventually gave in to this idea.It also appears that the WhatsApp founders clashed with Facebook over the mobile payments system which has been rolled out in India. This is based on India’s Unified Payments Interface.  Finally, there were clashes over encryption on WhatsApp with Facebook wanting to make it easier for businesses to use the app and its tools. The report notes, “WhatsApp executives believed that doing so would require some weakening of its encryption.” It also looks like Koum’s exit could be followed by others in November, adds the report. It should be noted that when the Facebook Cambridge Analytica data leak was first revealed, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Action, who had quit the company in February 2018, had tweeted, “It is time. #DeleteFacebook.” Acton is now part of Signal, another messaging app which has secure encryption. In fact, WhatsApp relies on Signal’s protocol for its end-to-end encryption. In a reply to Jan Koum’s post, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote, “I will miss working so closely with you. I’m grateful for everything you’ve done to help connect the world, and for everything you’ve taught me, including about encryption and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people’s hands. Those values will always be at the heart of WhatsApp.”Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg commented on the post saying, “Jan, the work you’ve done building WhatsApp has connected so many people around the world. I’m grateful to have worked with you and I wish you all the best in your next chapter.” There’s no confirmation on who will be the next CEO of WhatsApp.

Delhi Tops in Rented Floor Search ; Magicbricks Survey

Magicbricks, India’s No.1 property site, analyzed consumer behavior over the last 12 months and “How India searched for Homes in 2017” captured interesting consumer trends in 2017 and tackled the myth that real estate buyers had exited the market due to aftereffects of various policy level interventions during the year.

According to “How India searched for Homes in 2017,” Maharashtra occupied the top spot with seven of its localities outshining to be the most preferred localities around the country. New Delhi remains a winner when it comes to rented properties while Navi Mumbai and Hyderabad are high on the buying meter.

Commenting on the comprehensive year-end report, Mr. Prasun Kumar, Head-Marketing, Magicbricks, said: “We have tried to capture consumer intent & behaviour on our platform through ‘How India searched for homes in 2017.’ In a year marked with several policy changes, the fact that there were more than 15 lakh active searches for a property in 2017 debunks the myth that buyers have exited the market and establishes that Real Estate continues to be a desirable asset for Indians. With prices remaining flattish over the last one year and demand-supply equation balancing out due to fewer project launches, it is certainly the right time for home buyers to invest in their dream home.”

The report – How India searched for Homes in 2017 – also reveals another interesting consumer behavior depicting that the residents are also especially particular about the type of property, down to the floor. Bengaluru is the one city open to mostly all building types. When it comes to specific choices, Hyderabad and Chennai prefer residential houses, plots and villas. Multi-storey apartments are popular in Pune and Navi Mumbai, whereas Delhi, Ghaziabad and Chennai prefer builder floors. Metro cities like Ahmedabad and Mumbai favour penthouses.

Gurgaon is testament to the fact that consumer preference for larger houses is increasing. Other cities like Ahmedabad, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, Pune among others opt for a smaller 1000 sq. ft. Although the 500-750 sq. ft. carpet area option remains the most searched for carpet area in the country, especially in Maharashtra and Kolkata.

Buyers in these top markets not only have preferences for type of house or size of house but they are also particular about the floor. While cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane prefer to stay in higher floors, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata mostly opt for the second floor. Delhi and Chennai remain the only cities that prefer the first floor.

That’s not all; lifestyle habits too dictate how people choose to invest in properties. According to the Magicbricks report, cities like New Delhi, Noida, Kolkata are bachelor-friendly, whereas Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai might be a struggle for singles. Unquestionably, New Delhi and Kolkata rank high for non-vegetarians, and Ahmedabad is a city perfect for vegetarians. Also, having a pet in cities like Gurgaon, New Delhi, Noida is fairly acceptable, but Chennai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad are so not pet-friendly.
