Airtel set to launch Rs 2000 smartphone in first week of October

After a tough fight in the ring of telecom services, Airtel is now set to take its battle against Jio to the next level. The company is planning to give a tough fight to the much-hyped JioPhone by launching a 4G smartphone. The new that the company in talks with domestic handset makers and would launch the phone at Rs 2000 is already known. However, India Today Tech has now confirmed that the Airtel’s 4G smartphone could arrive in the first week of October.

There were past rumours that the phone could be priced around Rs 2500 but now there are reports that the phone could be priced less than Rs 2000.

First reported by ET, Airtel’s move to launch a 4G smartphone aims to take a direct shot at JioPhone. Reports are that the phone could come bundled with data and voice calling benefits to match JioPhone.

Past reports also have that the smartphone will be financed by the smartphone maker and not the Airtel. The telecom company will be responsible for the voice and data benefits and would allow users to download all the apps from Google Play store.

“Airtel is talking to some handset manufacturers to bring in a smartphone around Rs 2,500, which will have a bigger screen, better camera and better battery performance than what a feature phone could offer,” a source told ET.

There are reports that Jio has already begun the shipment of JioPhone. The company has said that the phone will reach the semi-urban and urban areas first. The company has also said that it aims to sell at least 6 million units of JioPhone in the first two weeks. There are no rumours regarding the shipment of Airtel’s 4G smartphone but chances are that the company could start shipping the phone by the end of this year.

Talking about the specs, there are only speculations and nothing has been confirmed by the company yet. Airtel’s 4G smartphone is expected to sport a  4-inch display along with front and back cameras. The phone could have a decent battery life and is also tipped to come with VoLTE calling support. It may house 1GB of RAM.

Vihaan Networks signs deal with BSNL, launches service for disaster relief

Telecom equipment and solution provider VNL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned telecom network provider BSNL on Thursday to provide solutions for disaster management. The ‘Relief 123’ service will restore connectivity at disaster sites, help locate the affected and integrate information across platforms to enable informed decision-making for quick relief.

The MoU was signed between the two companies in the presence of Secretary, Department of Telecommunications Aruna Sundararajan at the India Mobile Congress 2017.

‘Relief 123’ service is an integrated disaster response solution for first responders and public safety agencies. The solution is designed and manufactured by VNL and the backhaul connectivity will be provided by BSNL. The service has been designed to work in different scenarios including natural disasters such as earthquakes, storms, floods and tsunamis. The service claims to be designed to restore connectivity at disaster sites, help locate the affected and integrate information across platforms to enable informed decision-making for quick relief.

The move to deploy communication solutions will also bring BSNL and disaster management agencies – National Disaster Management Authority and National Disaster Relief Force on one platform for better coordination that will go a long way in saving lives during natural calamities.

This model can be scaled for SAARC countries, wherein BSNL would have roaming agreements with local Mobile Service Operators, and have type approvals executed in advance with local regulator. This will enable affected community to use their local numbers, and prevent any problems at the customs.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Anupam Shrivastava, Chairman & Managing Director, BSNL Ltd said, “Our latest initiative is dedicated to the service of the nation. Given that our country is prone to natural disasters, the availability and quick deployment of comprehensive communications solutions will help disaster management agencies mount faster and more reliable search and rescue operations. We are happy to partner with a domestic player like VNL in this noble endeavour, which has developed these innovative solutions in the area of disaster management, indigenously. By harnessing our telecom backbone that connects even the remote corners of the country, we aim to improve government’s response during emergencies by ensuring uninterrupted services to save human lives from natural calamities. In times to come we wish to extend this service to countries too, starting with the SAARC region.”

VNL Founder Chairman Mr. Rajiv Mehrotra thanked BSNL for giving the company an opportunity to partner in a project of paramount importance and said, “We are very proud to partner with BSNL for the rollout of this Disaster Relief Service. Considering the recent spate of natural disasters that have hit the world, this service has never been more relevant. We are committed to assisting first responders and public safety agencies in restoring connectivity when natural catastrophes strike. We thank BSNL CMD Mr. Anupam Shrivastava for entrusting us with an important responsibility once again”.

This project is a continuation of partnerships between VNL and BSNL. Both companies have partnered in the past for the roll out of voice and data connectivity in the worst-affected Left-Wing Extremism affected areas of India.

In a bid to increase market share, ICICI Bank has launched a cashbaclk feature in its home loans whereby borrowers will receive an amount equivalent to 1 per cent of their annual repayment. The cashback for the first three years will be paid at the end of the third year and every year thereafter.

The cashback feature is available on all new home loans taken out by both resident as well as non-resident borrowers. “This new home loan empowers borrowers to select their preferred mode of cashback. A borrower who avails a Rs 30 lakh loan for 30 years will be paying an EMI of Rs 22,749 annually. At the end of the third year he will get a combined cashback of Rs 8189 for the first three years and Rs 2,720 every year thereafter. The cashback will not be available to defaulters.

We believe that this proposition will propel customers to fulfil their aspirations of owning a home,” said Anup Bagchi, executive director, ICICI Bank.

The feature is available for loans of any amount for tenure ranging from 15 – 30 years. Those who have loans with other institutions can get the cashback loan if they choose to refinance with ICICI Bank. Subsequently, after every 12th EMI, it will get credited to the customer. This new offer is also available for other mortgage products like loan against property, lease-rental discounting and top-ups on existing mortgage loans.

The new product comes at a time when banks are witnessing a slowdown on credit growth. Year on year loan growth stood at 6.9 per cent as on September 15. Data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed that in the first four months of FY18 up to July home loan growth slowed down to 0.4 per cent with the housing portfolio of banks increasing by a mere Rs 3,600 crore to Rs 8.64 lakh crore.

Facebook unveils blood donation feature in India, rollout from October 1

Social networking giant Facebook is rolling out a new feature that will enable individuals and blood banks to connect easily with donors.

The feature, which has been designed for India, will go live on October 1.

Facebook will also show a message on user’s News Feed to encourage them to sign up as a donor. They would be asked to share their blood group and whether they have donated blood before.

In case someone is in need of blood, they will be able to create a special type of post containing the information donors need to offer help, like blood group required, hospital’s name and contact person’s phone number.

“India, like many countries, has a shortage of safe blood. We noticed many times, people turn to platforms like Facebook and Whatsappto find donors,” Ritesh Mehta, Head of Programs for Facebook South Asia, told PTI.

He added that thousands of people seek blood donors on Facebook each week and this tool is designed to make it more efficient by bringing blood donors and people in need together.

“Our research suggested that when people have better information and tools, they are more willing to donate blood and it is also easier to find donors,” he said.

All the donor information will remain private and set to ‘only me’ by default unless people choose to share their donor status on their timelines, Facebook Product Manager (Health) Hema Budaraju said.

She added that the feature (to be available on Android and mobile web) is being rolled out first in India.

Budaraju said people, and organisations like blood banks, hospitals in Delhi and Hyderabad will be able to connect with blood donorson Facebook. This will be extended to other cities over the next few weeks.

Once a request is created, Facebook will notify blood donors who may be nearby. Donors can then contact the requestor directly through WhatsApp, Messenger or a phone call.

However, the donor’s information will not be available to the requestor unless the donor himself/herself explicitly provides it.

“As part of our research, we spoke to blood banks, hospitals,  NGOs and industry experts to understand the challenges,” Budaraju said adding that the intent is also to raise awareness about blood donation in the country.
